Our Privacy Philosophy
Where Love Is was built with a simple, uncompromising foundation: Your stories belong exclusively to you. Every digital memory is locked securely inside your own local browser.
Stories Stay on Your Device
When you pen a memory title, write story details, preserve memories of loved family members, lost relative figures, childhood spots, or attach photographs, these are written directly to your browser's private database (IndexedDB).
Our servers have absolutely no physical mechanism to receive, view, store, or query your names, texts, or photographs. Your journal remains yours alone.
Only Anonymous Connections Shared
If you check the box to “Share this place's presence anonymously,” we only transmit an approximate location bucket. We achieve this by rounding coordinates to exactly 2 decimal places (representing an area of about 1.1 square kilometers).
The database only records generic figures (e.g., “17 memories near this 1.1km zone”) so the public map glows with shared warmth, without giving away exact streets or private storylines.
How Data Travels
Save a memory
You select a spot and write your story. The Web UI compresses photos locally and locks them safely in IndexedDB on your browser.
Coordinate Anonymizing
If authorized, we calculate `approx_lat` and `approx_lng` (e.g. `48.8584` becomes `48.86`). Exact values are deleted.
Global Glow Lighting
The server logs `+1` to the bucket. The public map updates, showing a simple glowing indicator: "Love was here."
Backup & Export Data
Because your stories stay on this device only, clearing your browser details or changing browsers will remove them. Keep your memories safe by exporting backups.
Export Memories
Download your memories, pictures, and coordinates as a private `.json` file to save on your computer.
Import Memories
Restore memories from a previously downloaded backup file onto this browser database.
Important Privacy Notice:
Exported backup files consist of your raw story text, dates, names, coordinates, and photo assets. They are plain JSON files and are completely unencrypted.
Please store these backup files in a safe place (such as a password-protected folder, encrypted drive, or private cloud storage space).
